My Day Out with Boo,Just She and I Too

Lifestyle Section - Editors Letter

We all have a book,  we keep to us close. Even if seldom we give it a look. They just seem to follow us, I guess you could say.  But just when you need them – they’ve gone clean away.  Damn. Anyway. I needed this book, on Sunday night.  It’s a treasured possession, just like my bike.  It arrived at my door, on a cold London day.  I was about to set forth, for somewhere.

As it turns out, I went via The Hague, Koblenz, Munich, Vienna, Trieste, Venice, Brindisi, Patras, Athens, Piraeus, Santorini, Eos, Naxos, Samos, Paros, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Ephesus, Oludeniz and Butterfly Valley (Fethiye), Cappadocia, Canakkale … and to the city where East meets West.

The book my friend had given me was, of course, Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr Seuss, and I traveled with it in my 7kg backpack for about three to four months, before arriving back in London via, well, a few other places.

I thought about this old book-friend, and my old friend, who is one of three Jeremy Thompsons I know, except he hasn’t got a “p”, if you know what I mean.

His 20-year-old present to me begins:

“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day!

“Your mountain is waiting, So get on your way!”

It then continues: ...

Well, I would tell you, but I can’t find the damn thing, even though it’s been at my bedside for the past 20 years. Hold on, I’ll Google it. Here we go:

“You have brains in your head.

“You have feet in your shoes.

“You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

“You’re on your own.

“And you know what you know.

“And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go...”

And then:

“Today is your day.

“You’re off to Great Places!

“You’re off and away!”

I thought about all this as I set forth a few days ago with my New Best Friend. Well, my Newest Best Friend, when my First and Second Best Friends are out playing hockey or on stage, or skateboarding or Pretending To Study.

We call the latter “WABBING”, which stands for “Work Avoidance Behaviour”.

One particular member of our family already has a Doctorate in it.

We set out, together, in our chariot of choice,

“Just Me and Boo both, she with full voice!”

After all, as we know, you’ll hear Dr Seuss say:

“It’s opener, out there, in the wide, open air!”

When I’d left the White Cliffs, a long time ago,

I knew with excitement, the treasures which bode.

But this time was different! We were exploring S-West,

And not all of Europe, as you’ll no doubt have guessed.

And this time was more precious, I know now too,

Because I was the Tour Guide, for my Little Boo.

I showed her the promise, her first glimpses of life,

Of how beautiful the world is, from the seats of Our Trike.

Oh the Things That We Saw!

It’s a Very Long List.

Our Eyes were So Wide,

There was NOTHING we missed.

We saw a new home, with some Pin Oaks outside,

We saw Our Two Cousins, out for a ride.

Oh such Tall Trees, Towering Above,

An African Hoepoe, the Wings of a Dove!

We sure had some fun, did Me and My Boo,

And so we decided, to trike until Two.

Eventually we returned, Happy (but bushed),

Having seen as much beauty as anyone could have wooshed.
